Women Entrepreneurs Pioneering Eco-Friendly Innovations
Meet two inspiring women creating sustainable businesses by championing biodegradable products and green farming.
Phan Thi Thuy Phuong and Nguyen Thanh Diem are two women forging new paths in sustainable entrepreneurship in Vietnam. Their determination to create eco-friendly products stems from a deep-seated commitment to environmental issues and the goal of creating a healthier planet.
From Remorse to Redemption
Phuong, a former journalist in Ho Chi Minh City, used to promote plastic bags in her earlier career. However, after realizing the environmental devastation caused by these materials, she sought redemption through meaningful action. In 2011, she teamed up with chemical engineer Le Loc, a pioneer in biodegradable packaging, leaving her journalism career behind to produce eco-friendlier alternatives.
Despite an initial surge of enthusiasm, challenges quickly arose. High costs of imported materials and a populace reluctant to embrace alternatives to plastic posed significant hurdles. Undeterred, Phuong embarked on a campaign to educate consumers about the harmful impacts of traditional plastic.
Turning Passion into Business
In 2013, Phuong and her team went a step further and established a factory in Dong Thap Province to produce biodegradable bags, but commercial success eluded them. A tragic turn of events followed with the passing of her collaborator Le Loc in 2014, alongside Phuong’s personal battle with cancer.
By 2017, after recovering, Phuong was back in the field, driven once more by her passion for environmental stewardship. With the support of the Ho Chi Minh City Women's Union, she renewed her efforts to promote biodegradable options in traditional markets. In 2019, her hard work culminated in the formation of Phuong Lan Environmentally Friendly Packaging Company Limited, making strides in bridging the gap between green products and consumer acceptance.
Cultivating Change through Agriculture
Joining Phuong in the world of eco-friendly enterprise is Nguyen Thanh Diem, a resolute single mother. After relocating to Ho Chi Minh City with her children, Diem's journey led her to develop a sustainable agricultural business focused on growing chillies using eco-conscious practices.
However, a devastating flood in 2025 wiped out much of her chilli crop, pushing her to explore new agricultural opportunities. Inspired by her desire to innovate, Diem gradually shifted her focus to cultivating seeded bananas, a native species adaptable to diverse conditions.
Now, her banana plantation spans roughly 10 hectares and contributes to the livelihoods of about 10 workers, including two individuals with disabilities. The sustainable farming practices employed on her land not only minimize chemical use but also offer stability and insurance for her employees.
Creating Sustainable Products
Diem has also ventured into producing banana-derived products, including banana powder and fabric from banana plant materials. This strategy diversifies her revenue streams, ensuring resilience against market fluctuations. Her initiatives demonstrate a commitment to valuing every part of the banana plant, recognizing opportunities for culinary and commercial uses.
Additionally, Diem credits the Women's Union for their support in promoting her products at various events, amplifying her business and influencing market interest.
Empowering Women Entrepreneurs
The Ho Chi Minh City Women’s Union is actively engaged in projects aimed at empowering women like Phuong and Diem. They advocate for nurturing female entrepreneurship through established support systems, access to finance, and a focus on sustainable practices. With an eye toward digital transformation and green initiatives, the union is committed to fostering an ecosystem where women entrepreneurs can thrive.
Through their individual journeys, Phuong and Diem exemplify how determination, environmental consciousness, and community support can cultivate meaningful change. Their stories inspire others to take proactive steps in preserving the planet, all while successfully navigating the entrepreneurial landscape.
